Check Engine Soon light is on

Check Engine Soon light on.  I changed the air filter and checked the gas cap.  What would be my next step before going to the dealer and have them charge me an arm and a leg just to look?

Check with your local auto parts stores, some of them will let you borrow a code reader to check it in the parking lot (does not apply to OBDI vehicles). What year is your Sentra?
