starts up and runs fine after warming up when you come to a stop engine dies    
and starts right back up let foot off accelerator dies, put knew alternator on

Your truck probably has a carburetor but that year I think they came with either injection or carb. If it has a carb then it likely needs a rebuild (difficult as smog carbs are really complex) or a new one or maybe just a tune up and an idle speed adjustment.
