Clock and Climate Control Temp numbers at night

Asked by wb155 Jul 03, 2012 at 08:13 AM about the Nissan 300ZX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just purchased a 1986 300ZX with digital dash and climate controls. At night, I cannot see the numbers on the clock or the numbers on the temp control. I can see them fine during the day. Maybe some kind of backlight out.

Anyone have a suggestion?

I've got it turned all the way up. The digital read out on the instrument panel (speedometer, tach, etc) are no problem. It's as if there is no backlight.

Both these units are back lit using plain ordinary instrument light bulbs. Your problem is they're all burnt out. You need to pull out the front cover over the radio/climate control/clock (two screws behind the ashtray, two screws in the top of the frame), then remove them as a unit (four more screws) You'll also have to remove the top cover of the climate control to gain access to the light bulbs. I think the bulb in the clock can be changed without taking it apart.

I'm having a similar issue. Digital gauges work, (correctly when car is warm) but the cluster (back lamp) doesn't light up. Nor does the illumination control rheostat work. Accelerator/compas lights /arrows work. But when I cut lights on , only the arrows on the secondary gauges (compas ,accelerator) climate control lights very dim. Clock light works , but stuck on 12:00. Other bulbs appear fine, yet none are on.. 86 z31 no stereo. Recently purchased
