galaxy wont change gear!!!

hi we have a ford galaxy 2.8 auto ghia. when we start up there is a ticking noise from underneath the gear selector. we have took the panel off and can only change gear once the clip is in a certain position. also it changes up the box manually but stays in 3rd gear when in drive any help would be apprieciated thanks josh

hi thanks for replying so fast we have taken it to a trans place that specialises in auto gearboxes. we had it reconditioned at a cost of £2100 but same problem as before it went in. am i right in thinking that there are wires in the bottom of the gearbox that sends messages to the ecu that corrode???
