My 99 Jetta won't start

Asked by Jun 29, 2017 at 09:54 PM about the Volkswagen Jetta

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drove my 99 jetta 2.0 to the lake last night, i had
the car turned off but I have a very bad habit of
pushing down in the brake whenever I'm sitting in
my car. So when I go to start it it clicks but wouldn't
start so I left it there. This morning my friend and
his brother went to go jump it and drop it off at my
house. Well when they got here with it he said that
it still wouldn't turn in so they had to push it home.
I don't believe that when he jumped it it wouldn't
start. Tonight when I got home from work I go
outside to check out as soon as I opened the door
the lights in the inside came on. I can't start it
because the guy still has my key. I think he's just
trying to make money off of me by trying to tell me
that its something more. Does anyone have an
opinion?

A battery with low voltage/amerage will allow the lights to work in the car but not enough power to start it. You can check the battery yourself with a volt or multi-meter. Probe the negative and positive terminals. You want to set it to DC voltage and the reading should be over 12V, is at or below, it's time for a new battery. Your local auto parts store can also load test it as well, just remove and have a friend drive you over. Batteries last an average of 3-5 years.
