Question type: Maintenance & Repair

would needing a starter make my golf go into limp mode and refuse to change
gears properly? side note- it drains the battery also.

The car goes into Limp Mode to protect the engine from damage, and this is very serious; you need to get the car to a mechanic NOW. A need for a starter will not do this. As for the battery drain, I'd suspect that's due to your repetitive cranking of a bad starter.
