Using 12v - 120v converter to power a computer

Question type: General

I've tried using a converter to power a laptop (around 100 watts) with a gps, and something made a sort of constant beeeeeeeep.  Is this standard?  Is it ok to use one of those "cigarette lighter" power converters in a Prius?

Thanks.

It's safe to use them but not for extended periods of time with the car off, as this will rapidly drain battery power. Laptop may have been beeping from low power input.
