2002-2006 had Land Rover's own Td5 engine (2.5 litre turbocharged diesel) - 122bhp/300Nm 2007 onwards has a 2.4 Ford derived "Puma" engine from the Ford Transit (sharing a few parts with Peugeot) 122bhp/370Nm
I drive a 2008 with the ford engine, but i'm kinda wondering how it compares to the old one. If you've driven both, what do you think?
Alex, Yes I've been fortunate enough to drive both. The 2008 model with the Ford engine is much, much better in most respects than the Td5 it replaced. It has about 40lb/ft more torque, an increase from 221 to 266 lb/ft, and obviously the 6-speed gearbox makes motorway driving far more bearable. I've only driven the 2.4 For engined Defender a very short distance on-road. My main use of it has been off road, where the anti-stall really REALLY helps. My only slight criticisms are: 1) I'm a tall guy, at 6'3'', and the driving position I use in the 2008 model means that the corner of the dashboard actually blocks part of the view of the mirror on the passenger side for me 2) Because of the shorter first gea ratior, and the 6th gear, you have to change through more gears when you're accelerating hard. This results in the 2008 model actually being about 2 seconds slower to 60mph than my 2002 Td5 used to be. But since the Defender was hardly ever a speed machine, this really isn't too much of an issue. But the shorter ratio of first gear has been known to catch me out sometimes accelerating from junctions. The revs build far quicker than the Td5's used to, meaning that a quick gear change is usually needed! Overall though, the 2008 model is quieter, more comfortable, warmer in winter, cooler in summer, has a better finish, nicer interior, far fewer squeaks and rattles, which, together with the anti-stall pretty much makes the Defender better at everything you would ever want it to be better at, and still top of the game everywhere else. Thanks man! The 2008 does indeed have a few flaws, but so does the old model. I'm also quite tall and i've noticed, besides the passenger mirror, that with the front seat in it's furthest backward position, the beam between the door and the rear window blocks half of your sight on the left side (btw: it's a lefthand drive). And whilst driving on paved roads and in town, i almost never use first gear, there is indeed enough torque to drive away in second gear easily without stalling. But considering what it was built for, it still does what it does best, being the best offroad machine there is :)
the V8 in the NAS ones such, the defender sickest truck ever, no one at school had any idea what the hell it was. the 90 is so much better than the 110.
nothing beats the Td5 (1998-2008) made for 10 years, says it all. Super tunable, gives 28-29mpg, low-down torque off road, high end power on road, what more could you want. And it sounds so much better than the transit van engine in the new onw
