I have have a 1965 Galaxie 500. The fuel gauge stays on empty. I had my mechanic check it and he said the sending unit was good. What is the best way to get behind the dash to check the gauge itself? I need to replace the dash pad anyway so I figured I would pull it and check out the gauge at the same time.

A gas gauge that always reads empty is a bad ground. If you have an aftermarket stereo check the ground straps there for the instrument cluster first. Anything else going on with the instrument cluster? Turn signal indicators glowing dimly, etc.? That's another indicator of a bad ground. Hope that helps! Jim

You're welcome. Glad to help. For the clock you can try removing it and spritzing the "innards" with a little bit of WD-40. I did that with the clock in a 70 Pontiac Catalina I had. The clock was still running 14 years later when I sold the car! Jim

if you don't find a bad ground go ahead and remove the dash but dont loose the rubber gromets that the 3 mounting screws go thru. I found a broken gear in mine and is out for repair as we speak (67 galaxie 500)
