is it normal for an automatic to shift from drive into reverse while driving?

Asked by GuruWLQDW May 04, 2018 at 02:10 PM about the Dodge Journey

Question type: General

my lg. Dog has bumped into my gearshift a number of times causing it to shift
past neutral and into reverse. The other day I hit the brakes unexpectedly, he
slid into he gearshift causing it to jump past neutral, reverse and into park
while driving at approximately 20 kilometres. This makes no sense at all and
the dealership may just scratch their heads.

If you were on the brakes, that would probably have activated the shift interlock switch, allowing it to go all the way to park, so personally I'd say yes, the transmission was allowed to shift into park. Other than going into park from 20 kmh, I wouldn't say there is any problem with it. You have to press the brake to shift from park to drive, or from drive to park, and at the time you were on the brakes (allowing the shifter to move) the dog bumped it and put it in park.

My Dodge Journey has also done this. And I was not pressing the break.I was driving and my purse fell on the shifter and the car pushed into neutral. All my other vehicles lock into gear so this does not happen.

I just had this happen twice on Saturday. Both times the dog bumped the gear shift and the first time put me into neutral and the second time into reverse. This concerns me greatly!
