Strong petrol smell in cabin when driving

Question type: General

Hi, this might be a silly question but I know the bare minimum about cars. I'm
travelling Australia in a Holden Commodore station wagon which I bought 4
months ago. I can't remember if I really noticed the smell when I first bought
it but it has definitely been occurring for at least three of those months. The
smell is a sometimes very strong, other times not so strong smell of petrol
inside the car when driving - I would say it gets worse when going up big
hills, probably as the car is having to use more fuel, but I am still able to
occasionlly smell it along flat roads. I thought maybe this is because I am
filling the tank nearly to the full mark so I have tried to fill it up only to about
1/4 to 1/2 tank when refuelling but this changes nothing. I always make sure
the cap is on properly after refuelling too so it can't be that, unless there is a
fault with the cap itself which i have not spotted. If I leave the car after driving
when the petrol smell is around, I can smell it quite strongly when I return to
the drivers seat shortly after.
