Will an alternator from a 1990 Pontiac Grand Am fit on a 1995 Chevy Lumina?

Asked by LuminaOwner Oct 10, 2012 at 09:55 PM about the 1995 Chevrolet Lumina

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've got an otherwise broken down Grand Am with a still good alternator on it, and would like to use it to replace my failing one on the Lumina. Will they be compatible?

Hi LuminaOwner, Your alternator issue aside, I hope you're having a pleasant day. I've wanted to replace the alternator in my '90 Lumina for a higher Amp model and have done a little research. I never finished the research or the project. I have some information/links that might be helpful to you. I believe that the main issues are, is the Amperage of the Grand Am Alternator high enough for the Lumina? Will it be a direct fit, or will you have to adapt it? Will the harness be a diirect fit, or will you have to get an adapter? Is the Pulley the same and will it line up properly with your Belt, and other pulleys? Just a small warning... the documentation I'm passing on to you, may be somewhat technical and confusing. Another option is to consult with your local salvage yard, if you have one like the one in my vicinity, they might be a good resource, not only for a replacement, but a higher Amp model as well. A typical issue with some of the GM alternators is a drop in current at idle, or when accessories are turned on, like your lights, turn signals, heater fan, etc... One of the resources herein allows you to punch in your VIN, and get a list of all the components that the factory created your specific car with, and it should list what AMP alternator your 90 Grand Am came with. Then run the decoder for the Lumina, and see if the AMP rating is the same. If it's not, well then, it's off to the auto parts suppliers. I hope this helps, or at least that you find it interesting. Wonderful stuff, my friend. Thanks a lot. I did end up going to the local salvage place and getting a replacement. I'll definitely keep the links you provided close to hand for future reference should the need arise. Thanks again.

I have gotten 1999 lumina. And the transmission is bad. I bought a transmission from a friend. He one he bought for his impala it was WRONG TRANSMISSION. SO I BOUGHT IT OFF OF HIM. And I need to know will it work in the lumina. Or no.
