I have a 1996 lumina 3.4 engine my car keeps shutting and has no power

My car keeps shutting off after I go about a mile or if I press on the gass pedal or go down
hill stay on when going up a hill but will only go about 25 mph with pedal to the floor

I also have the car in park and it revs to 4 to 5 rpm

I have a '99 Chevy Lumina LTZ, and for the first couple of years that I had it it would never really heat up until the past two years, when I noticed the temperature gauge actually moving. Anyway, when it heats up(needle in the center or right in the gauge), my car shakes and it shifts really hard. Any ideas?
