Intelligent 4x4 system

Asked by Mar 11, 2018 at 08:57 PM about the 2005 Ford Escape

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 05 ford escape with the intelligent 4x4 i
have a issue with it when i back up it all seems to
bind up then when i pull away it makes a
obnoxious grinding then jerks out of the 4x4 im
guessing. My main question is what controls the
4x4? Is it the main brain? A special brain located
somewhere else? Sensors?

Binding is a sign of a driveline issue. Have a shop get the car on the lift to inspect the transfer case, driveshaft and rear differential. Do you know the last time the rear dif. fluid was changed? It should have been changed at 60K. might be low on fluid.
