How to change the thermostat

Asked by contactbuzz2 Dec 27, 2006 at 04:56 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet Venture

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I would like to locate the thermostat and change it. The heater is blowing cold air, so I don't think the thermostat is opening. There is plenty of fluid in the vehicle.

Hello The thermostat on a 1997 Venture is extremely difficult to access. It is located on the right side of the motor behind the top hose on the motor. To change it, you must remove the exhaust manifold. Then use a stub wrench to get the bottom bolt. The bottom hole in the gooseneck housing is actually a slot. You therefore can loosen the bottom bolt to allow enough clearance to get the housing by the thermostat. I would only recommend attempting this if you are extremely familiar with your car's engine and have all the proper tools. If not, you may have a bit of a mess on your hands. Best of luck either way!
