Could be timing related, but possibly related to internal engine mechanical problems. Is the smoke bluish-grey, or blackish? Black smoke indicates a rich fuel condition, bluish-grey indicates oil being burnt, which could come from valve stem seals, piston rings, etc. If the smoke is white it could be a head gasket/burning coolant.
