Car dies while pulling out of driveway, now when key turned NOTHING? HELP!

Asked by Mason Sep 28, 2016 at 12:56 AM about the 2008 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Dash board only comes on when lights are manually turned on, but even
then, only the brights and hazards function but not headlight, wipers, turn
signals. Checked all fuses and are all fine. Tried jumping but again the key did
absolutely nothing when turned. Any clue on the issue?

Hi fastmary thanks for the tip, I do not have a voltmeter, I will check the connections early afternoon, I do not see any lose wires currently. (forgive my terminology inaccuracies) It is just strange to me that turning the key to the "electronics" stage has no effect whatsoever, and then turning to "ignitiion" stage has no effect either. Yet I would assume the battery is fine because the brights function and interior lights, radio, dash lights, hazards etc. BUT the wipers do not work, and CANNOT MOVE CAR OUT OF PARK(auto trans.)?! Could it be a weird safety precaution malfunction that will not allow transmission shifting or starting engine???

After watching a few youtube videos, I believe it may be the starter or in the "transmission range sensors" since seems most everything else is functioning. Which may explain why it DIED in the first place many seconds after it had successfully started
