The engine block cracked

Asked by rasmuth Aug 07, 2015 at 11:22 AM about the 2008 Honda S2000

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The engine block cracked and my options are to replace the block but not the top end. The other option is to replace the entire engine with a used one that has 70,000 miles on it.  Mine currently has 88,000.  Does anyone have experience with the reliability of just changing out the block and keeping the old top end.

First a disclaimer: I have no experience with the Honda S2000. But in other cars I have been-there-done-that. Any Honda is a well engineered car, including engine and for it to have a cracked block this soon, 7 or 8 years and 88k miles is rare. Unless neglected and allowed to overheat badly. I am not suggesting you did neglect maintenance and ordinary fluid checks.. or did you? That being said, get a rebuilt crate engine or the used and don't re-use same heads. They (the heads) were stressed along with block.

Replacing the block will still require all the gaskets, rings and bearings. I would look at a low mileage used engine only if there were service records available. If no service records, I would build an engine using a new block and the existing head (provided it was checked at a reputable machine shop).

I bought a crate motor from Japan for a car I had and had no problems. just make sure its the exact same one your replacing! I actually had them come pick it back up and send back the first one I got, it wasn't the same as my old one. So make sure its exact. but other than the shipping delay it ran great and I had no problems.

Crate engine would be great, but are they still available for the discontinued S2000? Will it be compatible if ordered from Japan?
