1) Fuel in the tank? 2) check the lines along the frame to see if there are any leaks. 3) check the fuel pump and rubber lines. It is likely the fuel pump or a cracked fuel hose or line.

one problem with older cars is the fuel line rots out above the rear axle , it won;'t leak gas because it's at the top but the pump will suck air
