Ignition Issue

Asked by JamesNicoleKainGage Sep 23, 2019 at 01:03 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I turn the key to the "Start" point (E) of the
ignition, the key is supposed to turn back
into the "Run" point (D) *car does start &
runs* but the key doesn't fall back into the
"Run" point, the dashboard displays
(radio/rpm/fuel/etc) do not work & even
though the car is running I am unable to
shift (automatic) out of Park.? It's never
done this but the day before this took place,
everything mentioned above happened &
even though I was unable to turn the key
back at all, I slightly turned it forward to
where the starter chirped (cause it was
running) & when I let go of the key it went to
the Run point, all the displays came on, & I
was able to get it out of Park..? Now it will
not turn back at all, I had to pull the ignition
fuse under the hood to shut it off &
disconnect the battery so I wouldn't kill it.
Please help me.?

All your problems are due to the key not returning from the start position back to the run position. With the key in the start position, you get electricity to the starter and not to the lights, etc. The ignition switch probably just has a broken return spring and you need to replace the switch.
