My brother-in-law gave me his 1985 Buick Riviera supercharger to sell.  I don't
know anything about cars.  What is this worth?    bnoehren@aol.com

If it is a factory unit, it is a turbocharger, not a supercharger. It all depends on the condition. They are not "rare" and there are places that rebuild them so unless you know it is like new, it is probably just a "core" Also ....did the "supercharger" come with a car.......that changes the entire conversation.

As I mentioned, I don't know much about cars, but everywhere I looked online, it was referred to as a supercharger. Someone recently told me after seeing pictures, it was an M90 (whatever that means)

That supercharger did not come out until 1992 and went away with the end of 3800 production.. It was used on various GM 3800 V6 engines.in everything but Cadillac. Condition is important, the bearing in the snout are often bad because the oil level was not maintained. The only Riviera that used the supercharger was the last series, 1995-1999

WOW! I am at a loss. My bro-in-law says it's for his 85 Riviera... I'm not sure whether it was IN that car, or he BOUGHT it for that car. I suppose someone could have sold him that piece under false pretenses... I just don't know. Is there a way for an idiot like me to tell you whether that 'snout" bearing is bad? or maybe you're not even interested in it... and I'd be wasting my time. Are you sure that its not for an 85? IS there another angle I should shoot to help you better determine that? I'm not doubting you with any arrogance on my part - as I said... I know nothing... Or, if you aren't interested, do you have any suggestions for me?

It is possible that someone put a later Buick engine in the 1985. The 1979-1985 Buick Riviera came standard with a V6 ....at that time it was called a 3.8. The optional engine was a 305 V8 and a "turbocharged" V6 could be ordered the V6 cost more than the V8 so very few were made. But all of these were turbo-charged, the engine was closely related to the Buick GN. You can do a search on Ebay for the 3800 supercharger.....I am sure there are some there for sale. I have no idea what just the supercharger is worth....regardless of condition.

In this scenario, ANYTHING is possible... some guy looked at the picture and said it was an M90 whatever that means. Does that jive with what you are thinking?
