what are the possible problems and/or fixes for a 1983 riviera thats speedometer only reads '0'

the speedometer in my riviera ( i think its a 1983 ) stays at '0' and I'm trying to figure out
what the possibilities are as to whats causing this so I can maybe fix it myself

I'd start by replacing the battery with a brand new one...then clean the clamping terminals with a wirebrush...the other end of the black cable that connects to the chassis ground should be wire brushed down to the metal..and the washer and bolt too....yes good solid ground for your instrument cluster---this may just set it all right~
