Car won't start sometimes and has no error codes

Asked by hestonn Jun 01, 2015 at 01:21 PM about the 2008 Hyundai Accent

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2008 accent seems to lose power at random times.  Mostly when I go to start it.
Sometimes it will be completely dead, and sometimes it feels like theres a delay before it
actually starts.  I've brought it in get worked on a few times, but the mechanic is
stumped.  There are no error codes during diagnostic.
Any idea's?

I would recommend checking the battery terminals but you said your mechanic was stumped so I am quite sure he checked that all ready. When you say sometimes it's completely dead do you need a jump to get it started ? Is the starter clicking ? or will it start eventually if you let it set for a while?

We've had it die completely on us…and then a few hours later it started fine. I've jump started it once and that worked. There's no clicking…its like it just has little to no power. It does eventually work. I found a burnt peanut on the battery, so I thought maybe a squirrel got in there and chewed at something. The mechanic checked all the ground wires and what not, but everything looked fine.

I would ask your mechanic to check the wires going to the starter silonold making sure they are nice and tight and it may be the starter or silonold was shorted out since you said there was a burnt peanut on battery.

Let me correct my self you may have short in starter or silonold making it work sometimes and sometimes not. If it was actually shorted out it would not work at all.

Try this if one day it does not start. Get someone to start vehicle while someone else taps on the starter with a hammer while trying to start . If vehicle starts its the starter.
