How is it that a dealership can sell a car on this site that is NOT on their lot?

I saw an ad for a car, contacted
the seller (a dealership),
received a reply, then yesterday I
went to the dealership to take a
test drive. I couldn't find the
vehicle on the lot.The man I
spoke to told me it was sent to
auction (transmission issues). I
asked about two other cars also
being advertised (I didn't see
them either). He told me they
were also sent to auction (same
issues). However, those two
cars are still being advertised as
for sale. The dealership no
longer has them, so how can
this be?

We saw a car on line at a dealership about 50 miles from us. Called talked to salesperson, he answered few questions, verified car was available. The next day while out car shopping decided to make 50 mile trip to dealership, called them when about 30 minutes away, verified they still had car was told have ready to drive when arrive. We arrived asked for salesperson, he went to get car gone a while. When he returned said sorry sold. We reminded him only been 30 minutes since told car be available. Used paperwork excuse, then had new car, wrong, color, $15,000 more, brought out. We had called about used 2017 it was new 2018. Obvious old bate and switch skim. Needless to say told everyone know about this dealer, will not do business with them in the future. Still shopping, no rush, shopping for right car at the right price at the right dealer.
