You should have the vehicle scanned for codes, this would point you in the right direction. One cause that I know of would be the Throttle Positioning Sensor, and the wiring harness plugin. Gently pull on the wires at the TPS, if they move, seem spongy then the wires are broke inside the insulation. You'd want to replace the TPS also. Scanning for codes would show a code anywhere from p1515 to p1519.
