Shift gear

Hello my car is stuck in reverse when I use the gift
shift it just slides back and forth not catching a
gear. What does that mean?

Have you checked the shifter cable could be broke or came off. That's where I would start first.

No I haven't but when I looked it up on YouTube that's what it was telling me about the shifter cable...I just couldn't think of the exact name of the part. I thought it was maybe a chain. But I definetly have it checked out I appreciate it thank you sooooooo much...
