According to 2014 Malibu Owner Manual, "The front outboard head restraints are not designed to be removed." On the new design, the pad moves up and down on stationary posts. The posts can't be removed. The rear head restraints can be removed. There are buttons on the bases of the rear head restraints that allow you to release and remove the head restraints, if you wish.

From the backseat, push a finishing nail into the small holes at the bottom of the head rest posts. Do this on both sides, pushing head rest up each time. In no time the rest post will slide up like a fishing pole into the Head Rest itself . . . and they are Off !

On my Malibu there is a tab & Slot on both sides at the base of the headrest. It's confusing because they look different. Sitting from the backseat, there is a distinct tab on the left side of the headrest base that you push in to move the headrest up and down. On the right side there is slot that you need to push in as well to unlock it for the head rest to come off.
