Very loud deep noise when started 2004 Chevy Cavalier

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I started my 2004 Chevy Cavalier this morning and I immediately heard an extremely loud deep noise. I left it to run for a few seconds but I was parked on the street in a residential area and could not keep it running. I first thought to check to see if my muffler was still intact. It was still there and not loose that I could tell. Any ideas? I am scared to start it again given the terrible noise pollution and am scared to drive it that loud.

Check to see if the cat converter is still attached to the exhaust pipe. Some thieves enjoy stealing them.

Thanks! The cat converter was gone. Looked sawed right off. Man, some people just baffle me.

Yes they take them to the recyclers. Honest recyclers will only buy converter from muffler shops but not everyone is that honest. I would not drive it like this.

You can buy a splice pipe from the auto parts that will slide over the cut ends and take the place of the converter. This will allow you to drive it until you can get another converter installed.

Thanks so much for your help! I actually got things covered by my insurance company and they supplied towing. I was wondering about driving it so I am glad I asked about getting it towed. Sounds like I made the right decision. Thanks again!
