Is a 1/3 inch above the top hatch mark too much ATF?

Asked by Mar 03, 2017 at 10:24 AM about the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I followed all of the directions to check transmission fluid. I drove the car for
10 miles, 20 minutes and parked it on level ground, went through all of the
gears for a few seconds each and let the car run for 5 minutes. I then
checked the transmission fluid while it was still running. The fluid was a
about a centimeter below the lowest hatch. Then added some transmission
fluid, a half of the bottle first and the fluid still didn't reach the top hatch, so I
added the other half. However, I still overfilled by a centimeter or between
1/3 and 1/2 inch of fluid. Is this bad?

I would remove the extra fluid to get it to the top of the dipstick to be on the safe side. At an auto parts store you can purchase a hand siphon, a rubber bulb with a hose to suck out what you can from the dipstick tube.

Do I do this while it running?

Engine off.

Thanks! Also, how much should I take out?
