I have an 2007 envoy. i had the key in the ignition for a few moment listening to the radio. after about 30 minutes, the radio shut but the key would not release from the ignition.

Probably ignition switch there. To remove your key, look under the column, there will either be a hole, or an punch mark where a hole was supposed to be. Can stick something small up there to release the key.
