I had to hit the breaks hard last night to avoid a wrong way driver, then my breaks were soft all the way home, what's wrong?

you may have ruptured a brake line,check and keep checking your brake fluid level

If a master cylinder is a little weak a panic stop is all it takes to finish it off, the same is true with brake calipers and wheel cylinders.
