Timing change replacement

My 1991 D21 Nissan pickup has 250,000 km and has a rattle from the timing chain when starting cold. I've been told that the solution is to change the timing change. The rough estimate for replacement here in BC is $1500. I've never had to do any work on the engine or the drive train apart from the clutch. Syncro rings in the transmission certainly aren't as smooth as they used to be, it doesn't burn any oil, runs great, body is good shape. I'm retiring and would like to use this vehicle for another 15 years or so. Am I just throwing good money away to do this repair or should I just drive it till it drops? Thanks. Jim

Well you got your money's worth out of this vehicle I'd say. At this point, put money in it only if you want to keep it as a heirloom. Obviously repairs exceed vehicles value, but some vehicles hold sentimental value which may be your case. If you really want to keep it another 15 years, why not pull engine and give it a proper rebuild, and take care of those syncro rings while your'e at it? Shop around for prices, dropping a rebuild kit (new rings, gaskets, seals) on top of the timing set probably won't add that much to the cost.
