1984 Datsun 300zx help

So when I started my little datsun to head to work
this morning it started fine but when I put it into
reverse and gave gas it sputtered and died, so I
restarted it and tried again but I only got about
three feet before it died again. But when I put it into
drive and gave it gas it sputtered and died again. It
did that twice before I was able to inch into our
garage
