Car Idles Great, but cuts out when you give it gas

Asked by monicaklinger Apr 10, 2009 at 02:28 AM about the 1988 Mazda MX-6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

a friend put battery cables on backwards, since then i have had to replace numerous fuses and sensors.  When it first happened you couldn't even turn it over.  Now I've gotten to where I can turn it on, it idles great, all lights work, etc... but the check engine light is on and once you give it any gas, it cuts out and dies.  I've replaced the air control valve, throttle position sensor, mass air flow... and can't figure whats wrong.  Also when you take off the neg. cable the window wipers will turn on..???
