Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just picked up a 74 super beetle.
The engine will not turn over via the ignition key
switch.  I'm trying to understand this, entirely to
new, beetle.
Question. ..what is the "SEAT SENSOR SWITCH"?
What is it's function?  (Normal open/normal
closed? )
What does it do or prevent?
And I can only assume it sends signal by body
weight?

Just a guess, but it probably prevents the engine from starting if the seat is occupied and the seatbelt is not fastened. 1974 was a big year for the seatbelt/starter interlock. GM had an override switch under the hood that you could press to start the engine if the system failed. It's most likely normally open. Then when someone sits there and fastens the seatbelt that switch closes and the seatbelt switch closes to complete the starter circuit. HTH. -Jim
