what wires go to my new voltage regulator ? there wasnt one in my 73 beetle

i bought a 73 vw beetle baja, and it wont keep my battery charged and red light wont go off. i found that my beetle dosnt have a voltage regulator in it. it has a altenator. whats in the voltage reg. place is a rectangular thing with three wires. i bought a regulator but dont know what wires go to what... can someone help me ? the car is stripped of everything but lights and what you need to just drive. its a 1600 ...
