Clutch Pedal when pressed stays to the floor

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Went to leave the other day and the clutch pedal when I mashed it to go, stayed to the floor. i can use my hand to pull it back. I found a wire under the dash board that was loose. It looked like one end had broken off. It resembeled a clothes hanger type thing. I cannot figure out if that is the cause or where it attached if it is.

Hi, i think you will find the wire is cut or the wire not in it's place of the Master of clutch.

Clutch cable broke, you will need to replace the clutch cable assy.

Your Golf has a CABLE operated MECHANICAL clutch, not hydraulic like later models. When the cable frays strands peel back and jam the inner cable against the outer. You need to buy a new cable assembly. Quite easy to fit. Then adjust it.

I replaced the cable, even though the old was not broke.

If you replaced the clutch cable and its still stuck to the floor after depressing it (assuming you replaced it correctly and adjusted), there is only one other thing that would cause this, the return spring inside the trany has broke the only way to fix this is to pull the trany out as the spring is inside the release bearing section only assessable after removal. It may be possible to access this section from the left side of the vehicle wheel well but you may have to drop the trany abit to access this part, if you have a repair manual (Haynes) I suggest looking up the return spring R & R section (7A page 7) to see if you think you can do it on your own.

Another explanation is that the clutch pressure plate has collapsed. The centre bearing can also fail. The only way to fix this is to split the transmission from the engine and replace the whole clutch assembly.
