It looks like there were three engine choices for the 1977 Cherokee -- a 4.2 L6, a 5.9 V8, and a 6.6 V8. A T-18 4-speed manual transmission was standard.

Mine had an AMC 360v8 with 3spd automatic and full time 4wd. If you managed to get stuck there was a hub lock switch in the glove compartment.

I have recently baught a 1977 jeep Cherokee it has a 360 v8 it is black. looks like I have the same as Carollanut had. I am parting most of it out if you need something.

There must have been another powertrain option unless someone swapped it up in mine. I owned this from 1993-1994. Mine was a 1977 Cherokee Chief 2door with a 360 4-bbl and 4speed manual transmission. It had a TON of power too, pretty cool truck, but dismal 10mpg at best lol
