will a bad heatercore cause jeep to run hot

a plugged heater core would give you no heat in the cabin so , no , I don't think so , start with a new thermostat , coolant flush , take a look under the oil fill cap and let us know what you see .

No. Why do you think the heater core is bad? No heat inside? I would flush the system and make sure the coolant is full and then purge all the air out of the system.
