Buying a used car under 8,000

Asked by Mannytimote Aug 28, 2016 at 10:44 PM about the 2007 Dodge Charger

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I'm looking to buy a car but everyone is telling me
that buying a used car isn't easy. I did my reaserch
and find that most lots will sell you a car that's in
terrible condition and make you pay more than the
car is worth. What are some tips for a first time car
buyer to not get scammed into buying a car thats
worth less than I'm paying for?

Buying a used car is really easy. The tough part is getting a good one on a tight budget. Avoid all the German and English cars like the Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Mini and concentrate your efforts on reliable brands like Toyota, Honda, some Fords etc.

well, haven't you asked the 30 million dollar question! This goes back to horsie days when a cowboy could buy a good lookin' horse and it would drop dead 3 days later- buy what you like, but use cash, and get it from a private owner who can tell you how well they took care of it- buying from a dealer is a mistake because they show up every day with a mandate to make suckers pay too much- hola! that's what dealers do-

First, I applaud you for being aware enough to even ask the question, as many first-time buyers are not. Since research seems to be your strength, I would say that is your best tool. If you see a car you like at a used lot or from a private owner, be sure to use the different car valuing websites to check what the suggested price is for the car. This will allow you to negotiate intelligently with the person selling the car. Information is always power. Also, be realistic and know that a car in this price range will most likely need some maintenance work, like brakes or tires. Some minor issues are not a reason to completely reject the car, just be aware of major issues like electrical problems, transmission or engine issues that will be a much more costly repair.
