Left battery charger on for hours!

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

First, I'm a weak, helpless female, recently widowed, whose husband knew everything about vehicles. I am babysitting my son's Ram 1500 (which I am seriously considering keeping...will trade him my '94 Nissan PU! ;) ). I accidentally left it on Accessory all nite and the battery went dead. A friend came over and we hooked up my old battery charger. He had to go to work and I stupidly left it on for about 12 hrs. When I unplugged it, the battery wasn't hot and hadn't exploded or anything. It started, but engine light is on. Am afraid to drive it now, but need it today! Read here you can disconnect battery for 10 min. to reset it, but that was after an oil change. Can I do the same thing? Thank you! I LOVE this truck! It's like driving a luxury car, only better!

It's yellow. Thank you. The charger's dial wasn't even up to full all the way, if that makes any difference.

Sorry for you loss, being a widow. Sincere condolences. But please don't demean yourself, you're not weak or helpless...even if you feel that way. Anyway, like tennisshoes said, the slower the charge the better...an analogy is cooking a turkey. Put it in the oven @500° for 2 hours...or 325° for 4 hours. Which way is better? Maybe that's a stupid analogy after all, but I think you get the point.

I would keep that old Nissan- it won't cost as much to keep it running!

Thank you all for your replies. I went ahead and drove it to my job and when I started it this afternoon, the light was out!
