Dodge Ram 50 has intermittent starting problem

Asked by givememelon Oct 03, 2016 at 10:31 PM about the 1989 Dodge RAM 50 Pickup

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

upon starting accessories work but starter doesn't turn. I shift out of park, back
in, and all is well. Seemingly after driving then sitting briefly, re-starting will not
turn the starter again, and now shifting out and in does nothing. So far the
truck has eventually started again, usually after sitting a while.

Check battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight but sounds like the safety neutral switch is going bad. Next time it does it, try starting it in neutral vs park and see if it starts, if it does, replace neutral safety switch
