Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was parking my car and put it in reverse but the car stayed in drive.  The gear shift moves but it does not come out of drive.  I turned the car off and now it will not start at all.

It won't start because there is a neutral safety switch to prevent it from starting in gear. It's still in drive because either the transmission broke or the linkage/cable came apart. If you have the ability, go under the truck, find the cable end and see if it's attached. If you don't have the ability, call a tow truck to take it to a repair shop.

can this happen if your car was towed. also about a week ago i noticed that the car was kinda skipping into gear or not shifting smoothly.

if towed without someone present to use key to unlock shifter for out of park, disconnecting cable to manually shift to N is sometimes used.

Thanks 7jimmy7 that's exactly what happened. I called the tow company and they came out and fixed it.
