Is anyone familiar with the Carter BBS one barrel carb used on a 1963 Dart?

Asked by Jan 22, 2017 at 09:00 PM about the 1963 Dodge Dart

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1963 Dart, 225 slant six wont accelerate over 30 mph. At 30 it will lose
acceleration and often stall. I rebuilt the carb but the accelerator pump was
hanging up so I put the old one back in. The gasket at the top of the float
bowl gets wet with gasoline so I don't know if it's a flooding condition or a
lean one.  I swapped in a different coil but same problem. I've replaced the
points,condenser,rotor,cap.ballast,vacuum unit,fuel pump,blown out the
lines, adjusted timing. I can't figure this one out. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanx

Not completely familiar with your carburetor, but I had to recently rebuild a Motorcraft 2150 carb circa early 70's, the accelerator pump on a lot of the old carbs are an endless source of frustration, namely it's the gasket for those, and good luck finding a rebuild kit for them, they never have the parts you really need. While I can't diagnose your problem, I can suggest it is extremely well worth it to have the original carb professionally rebuilt, make sure the timing is good, and of course all springs are hooked up correctly. Wouldn't hurt to also confirm good fuel pump pressure.

these old carburetors have small ports and metering valves to mix gas and air under different conditions , the float level is one small detail ,,a hung up accelerator pump will cause problems , gaskets in a kit that look the same may have one small difference , .Or you can buy an after market one or a rebuild that you can "bolt on ". .

Sure the float is "floating?" Also- sounds like accelerator pump to me... If it's flooding, you'll see that on the spark plugs easily.

Not sure if this applies to you, but my '66 Cadillac had a Carter AFB. The was an idle air adjustment AND fuel adjustment. Your best bet is to get a factory shop manual for your Dart. Try Faxon Auto Literature in Riverside, California for a reprint. They have a website. If your spark plug electrodes are white it's running lean, black and sooty it's running rich. HTH. -Jim
