The most powerful muscle car in 1969 not the fastest...if you think it's the Shelby Mustang it's not!

Asked by Erik Sep 13, 2008 at 05:18 AM about the 1969 Dodge Charger

Question type: General

It's a Doge vehicle built from 1960 until 1974; the vehicle came with all engines from the Inline 6 engine to the badass king of motors the 440!  This vehicle had a version that was banned from racing because one of it's motors made soo much power it would snap the frame of the car...the engine would put out over 800 hp and the torque load would literally twist the frame...
I could mention a TV show but that would just give away the vehicle....

This vehicle with hooker headers and magnaflow mufflers can be heard from a good mile away...the look of the car itself sometimes keeps you from getting inside the car...you're just constantly checking the vehicle out...it's like a hot woman that you care about..

dodge coronet perhaps... mid-sized car, it also came with any engine

What you have on your mind for a powerful vehicle....you've heard of a bucket-T haven't you? You may or may not have heard of a Triumph sports car? Studebaker Silver or Golden Hawk? Chrysler Imperial.... Today's cars are a joke at least in the image department...

from your description, It sounds to be a Nascar prepped 69 Charger Dayton, with the HEMI. Nothing from the factory has that much power. The Hemi was the most power full of the factory V8s back then. With a good tun, maybe 600hp, but that is after the consumer got it. You also have to understand that the rating for Horse Power and Torque have changed since that time, too.

no im not htinking of the mustang im sure you have heard the saying found on road dead no im thinking of a chevy

Interesting all the old timers I grew up told me the 440 was the true engine and the Hemi was just the popular race motor. The guy that taught me about Dodge motors used to race them in the 50s in the mojave desert! It's interesting to see the comments I got back on this question.... Good thing I didn't ask who was the original designers of the Chevy trucks and cars....I wonder who would answer Studebaker?

Sure has the right motor under the hood, one that can become extremely loud under a heavy load! The one motor that would out last the 454 Chevy and the 460 Ford Big Block in an endurance race.... Beside the cars just look good....

Yes I've heard of Ford sayings...they suck for pulling any real weight! Well of a chevy eh...you have the 350 small block which screams very nicely...and then the 454 big block... I've got both of those motors in trucks....plus the 327 small block...sucks for pulling but sure does scream. Mustangs looked pretty and make nice movie props but overheating was a major factor...also happens to chevy's when they're pushed real hard...had several MOPARs you could push them hard...and they'd just vapor lock and stall!

68 was the year of the Hurst Darts and Cudas built with the Iron head A-880 Cross Ram Hemi. In 68-69-70 you could get just about anything you wanted from the factory, if you had $$ and had a dealership that knew who to ask. For example, I had a 68 Chrysler 300 with 2 shocks on each wheel, a Dana 60, and 6 piston Kelsey Hayes disk brakes. Came with a 375 HP 440. I got a ticket in the Mean Green Cruising 135 down I-10... Not too bad for ~3000 on the RPMs. In 1987, I built a 440 for my 66 Charger. 12.5:1s, Stage 6 Heads, HTC Crank, Carillo rods. Started with a Lunati and ended up with a Crower Imperial cam 750 lift 338 duration. I shot my crank with 30 thousandths hard nickel chrome and ran Vandervell Lead Indium bearings. I cut my cylinders with 2500 grit and used a Chrome ring. And I honed it with the head installed (From the crank side!) It idled at 1700-1800 RPMs. When I would RUN it, I couldn't get out of first without getting it over 9200 or 9300. I ran this as my daily driver for 2 years (When I could afford the gas!!!) Nothing like pulling a 1.20 60 foot time in a 4000 lb car on street tires and THROUGH the MUFFLERS! And it puts the fear on those that look over and you're standing it up and pullin away like a rocket, through first and second... My best time was 9.48 at 146 MPH. Couldn't tune it any more cuz I didn't have a cage. (It really bothered them that I wasn't running slicks and still pulling 1.20 60 ft times.) I've built HEMIs and I've built Wedges. The Blocks, though heavy, are superior. On HEMIs with Cross bolt mains, I have seen 50 PSI manifold pressure running a 1271 Huffer at 50% over and the motor lived. Try this on a Rat or a Boss motor and you'll be picking up crank peices... in a Hurry!

Thanks for the info. I'm building a TPI 440 for my 07 Dodge Ram 1500 short bed. "No, It ain't got a Hemi."

Yenko Camaros are great looking vehicles, most didn't have big block motors stuffed between the rails though. I'm referring to the Dodge Charger with the 440 big block a motor that will make you deaf....Wow how much I wish the muscle car days were back. I grew up with all hot rodders from the old days and now age is catching up with them...

I've found one good thing about FORDS...they do attract women a lot easier then the others. But I found just like women they all have that same issue, you are constantly fixing little problems that don't seem to go away!

145

WOW...I know this will sound like I'm putting an age on you but..you sound just like my dad's buddy I grew up with that used to race a Hemi powered truck on the dry lakes. Gene Therman, Korean War Veteran got up to 155 mph....he re-built my dad's 72' chevy pickup 350 motor that's now a 400 C.I. he said it was a race motor now for towing a trailer. So I put a 800 cfm carb on it, the transmission is setup to pull heavy loads. When I pull a trailer with a car on it, if I'm not careful I'll snap the hitch I also have to watch the gas gauge very carefully....it has about 100 mile range on the 16 gallon tank! If you're wondering you made my jaw drop after I read what you wrote above....it sucks growing up with a thing called Emissions controls on vehicles! It's odd the era of body builders seemed to go the same way muscles cars went...
