Engine died and couldn't restart until refueled

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Mercedes C180 2006 Auto Petrol- I am having a weird problem (or may be
its not weird) with my Mercedes C180 Petrol. The engine switched off when
i stopped at a traffic light and just couldn't start again at all. I checked the
front end and found that no fuel is coming to the spark plug side. I had half
fuel tank full. Then I called the break down guy and he just put 5 litre petrol
and the car started without any problem. He told me that the tank was
empty and there was no fuel but I STRONGLY DISAGREED as i know
exactly how much fuel my car use and the indicator and mileage was
correct for the half tank i used. I had the same problem after one month
and this time I refiled the car with 5 litre petrol and the problem is resolved
straight away. Can anybody  kind enough to suggest please what could be
the possible cause for this ?

I have double checked that the car had fuel in it so its not the fuel at all.

Thanks very much TrannyMan. Can you tell me if this sender/pickup is repairable or i need to replace it ? I recently got the service done so Fuel filter is just a couple of months old so I don't think fuel filter is clogged. Thanks

Thanks, but here we are talking about two things if i understood your correctly, One is Sending Unit and other is Filter within the Tank, right ? So Shall i first replace the Sending unit which i guess is easy to do or shall i get the tank removed and get the filter withing checked ? Thanks
