i have a 2000 bug what is the epc light and why does my bug lose acceleration when it comes on

the EPC light comes on but there isnt any pattern to it, and when it does its like i have no gas pedal the car is running but its not getting and gas when i press the pedal, if i stop and restart it its fine?

The EPC light is the Electronic pedal control. The mass air meter, brake switch, the throttle body, the gas pedal, wiring, and the computer all are tied to the EPC light. If you had a EPC or the engine light on then there is a fault. This can cause the computer to enter a limp mode or the improper signal is sent from the accelerator which manifests itself as poor performance. There have been some recalls on this so I would visit your local VW dealer.
