How many miles on a Timing Belt, 2001 VW Passat?

Asked by jnette Mar 30, 2015 at 05:44 PM about the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A VW dealer told me the timing belt had to be changed at 127,000.  Seems like an awful lot.  My car has 127K miles on it.  Wonder if there is a reason for the similarity.?  Oh, BTW, the owner's manual has nothing about a timing chain/belt in it.  It does have one doesn't it?  jnette

Yes the 2.8L does have a belt and VW says 105,000 miles. Which STILL seems a lot, and do water pump at same time. Save money in long-run. And it is an interference engine, which if you are not familiar with the term, timing belt breaks at highway speed = major engine damage

What the dealer might have meant is that since you have 127,000 it needs to be replaced

Maintenance manual should call for replacement at 105000 miles on both the 1.8 and 2.8 engines. Belt, tensioners, water pump, and thermostat should all be done at once.
