White smoke from 2001 vw beetle

Asked by May 21, 2017 at 10:12 AM about the 2001 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We've just bought my daughter a 2001vw beetle
(non turbo ) and it's started pumping white smoke
from the exhaust. We drove it 100 miles home and
it was fine. But last night it was pouring out. 5 mins
later when I followed her home it was fine. No
warning lights. Smoke smells faintly of fuel, no
loss of compression, idles and accelarates fine, oil
and coolant levels fine and not overheating. Any
suggestions?

White smoke is coolant in most cases. You will notice it more when the engine is cold. Have the engine looked at by a mechanic who can perform a test on the engine. You want them to do a cylinder pressure test and or leak down test to determine if the head gaskets need to be replaced. Good Luck.
