I own a 2001 Jetta GLX VR6 and I can say from experience that a cassette adapter will be your best option. The FM transmitters don't provide good sound quality. And Volkswagens are known for "rejecting" aftermarket head units. Your interior lights and alarm will most likely stop functioning correctly. Overall, electrical gremlins will pop up left right and center. So just stick with a cassette adapter. I use this one and it's great because it has an elbow near the jack so the wire doesn't break, and it has a built in mic so you can use handsfree calling without the need for speakerphone to be on. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/griffin-technology-directdeck- cassette-adapter/1913019.p?id=1219067158898

And set your iPhone volume setting to 80-90%, then use the stereo volume to adjust as normal.

Get a stereo shop to install a female USB port somewhere in your dash or glove box & connected up to your system.
